Fanning The Flames Of Love

23 02 2007

flames1.jpgIn 1 John 2:15-17 we are told what NOT to love. That must mean to love or not love is a “choice”. It also means it is possible to fall in love with the wrong things.

It’s easier to keep from loving the wrong things then it is to stop loving them. Once something finds a sweet spot in our lives it is much harder to turn away from it. Yet that is just what must be done if one loves the wrong things. The question is how?

The easiest way to stop loving the wrong things is to fan the flames of love for the right things!

So, what are we supposed to love? – TWO THINGS:

1. The things God loves!

2. The things God commands us to love!

With those two categories in mind we see that one of the most important things we are to love is Christ Himself. One can hardly claim to be a Christian without loving Him. However, Jesus said “If you love me, keep my commandments.” So we know that true love demonstrates itself by obedience.

We also find that we are to love our wives and the church (Ephesians 5:25-33). What a revelation it is to see how lofty a view of the church God holds. It is not some optional accessory to the faith. It is a vital element. To God be glory in the church!
